Q My inbox was reported as three-quarters full in an email
with a warning that I might be cut off. How can I transfer its contents to a
folder on my external drive?

A This message probably refers to the amount of space your emails are taking up with the internet service provider rather than on the computer. If this limit is exceeded incoming emails are returned to the sender with an error message. Outlook Express can remove emails from the server automatically but we suggest delaying the removal of emails for a week or so just in case there are any problems with the computer.
Start Outlook Express, click on the Tools menu and then on Accounts. Double-click on the email account. It may be clearer to click on the Mail tab first. Left-click on the Advanced tab and then in the box labelled ‘Leave a copy of messages on the server’ so that a tick appears. Also, click in both boxes below this to remove after a certain number of days and also to remove when deleted. Click on OK and then Close.
The emails are stored in a folder on your hard disk even if they are removed from the server. To find this folder for backing up, click on the Tools menu and select Options. Left-click on the Maintenance tab and then on the Store Folder button. A small window will appear with the folder location. This text can be selected with the mouse. Do so, then press Ctrl and c together to copy the location into the clipboard. Left-click on the Start button and then on My Computer. Left-click in the address bar, delete the contents and then press Ctrl and v together to paste in the address. Press enter to show the contents of the folder. Be careful only to copy the files out. If they are deleted or renamed you may lose emails.
